Wife a Ogdensburg Receives News And Informs Mother

Tech, Sergt. Thomas M. Kernan, 25, was killed in action, April 12, in Gemany, a second War Department telegram. Informed his mother, Mrs. L. D. Terrell of 65 1/2 Owego Street, and wife, Mrs. Ruth Kernan, R, N of Ogdensburg.

The latest telegram, received yesterday, followed closely a first, received Monday, and listing Sergeant Kernan as missing in action in the German theater since that April 12 date.

The Cortland soldier Who was connected with an armored division of a tank battalion, had been overseas a little more than a year. Shipping overseas to England In February, 1944, Sergeant Kernan was in on the June D-Day invasion of Normandy and the December batlle Of the Belgian Bulge. Neither War Department telegrama gave, any further details pertaining to Sergeant Kernan. Yesterday's official dispatch stated that a letter would follow. Latest word received by Mrs. Terrell from her son was a letter April 8, headed "somewhere tn Germany",

Sergeant Kernan would have been in service, four years this August. He received his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky,, and before going across, last February, was on Army maneuvers In California. A native of Cortland, and lifelong resident until his entrance Into the Armed Forces, Sergeant Kernan was born September 23, 1919 at the present residence of his mother. He is the son of the latest Thomas M. Kernan.

The Cortland soldier is a graduate of St. Mary's High School. He was employed during his civilian life by the Mohican Market and later, by Wlckwire Brothers, Inc.

Other near relatives surviving Sergeant Kernan include his Infant daughter, Vicki Louise, whom ha had never seen: and a halfbrother, Sergt, Harold Hartnett who is servlng with a B-29 bomber squadron in the Southwest Pacific,

Suriving him also are his stepfather, Mr, Terrell, and several aunts and uncles, Mrs. Neil Kernan of Lincoln Avenue; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fish of Lincoln Avenue; Roger connners of Clinton Avenue; Mr. and Mrs, Thomas King and Mrs. Grace O'Brien of Elmira; and Mrs. Julia Daley of Sonyea.
